After a hiatus of nearly 3 months due to personal reasons, I am back to my world of blogging with this healthy recipe with moringa as a star ingredient.

They say “we are what we eat” and yes eating healthy, in moderation with a little indulgence once in a while and exercising is the key to a healthy living.

Moringa oleifera, otherwise known as the drumstick tree is grown in tropical climate, is draught resistant and is mainly grown for its nutritious leafy greens, flower buds and mineral rich pods.

Some of the medicinal properties of the moringa are:

  1. The leaves are said to contain more calcium than even milk, rich in vitamins, proteins and calcium and has the anti-inflammatory property.
  2. Fresh pods are a great source of oleic acid
  3. The fresh leaves and pods are loaded with B complex vitamins
  4. Soups prepared with drumstick leaves and pods are said to help ease menstrual cramps
  5. Since the leaves are rich in zinc, it plays an important role in hair growth, spermatogenesis and skin health

It is used in the treatment of:

  1. Inflammation related diseases
  2. Cancer
  3. Asthma and allergies
  4. Anemia
  5. Stomach cramps and spasms
  6. Blood pressure
  7. Heart related diseases
  8. Epilepsy
  9. Chronic headache
  10. Thyroid related problems
  11. Bacterial and fungal infections and many more disorders

I think our ancestors knew so much about these medicinal properties, that they made sure to include the leaves and pods in their regular menu which we overlooked for the past few years and having decided to change the way I cook and eat, this soup now features regularly in my diet. Thanks to my aunt Lakshmi who is ever helpful to teach me these healthy recipes.

Some times the props that are available also prompt us to make specific recipes and blog about it. These mugs are from Madras glassware house and I must say that there delivery is super quick. Kudos to vijay for his customer service. They ship to all places and they are so perfectly packaged as well. I have bought few glass ware from them and you will see them soon here.

So true Veena. Our regular food was so balanced and healthy. Down the lane we forgot everything and now after the western world classify it as Superfood, we start glorifying it. Completely oblivious to the fact these were/are in our roots for a long time.
Definitely bookmarked!

This soup recipe looks very interesting. Haven’t used drumsticks in anything besides sambar.
Will definitely try this soup.
