Omavalli ilai or ajwain leaves have a distinct flavour and medicinal values. Our cuisine does use this extensively. Omavalli illai paruppu kadaiyal is a dal with the mild flavour of ajwain leaves

Cook the dal in pressure cooker till soft. Mash well. |

Cut chillies and tomatoes finely |

Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds and when it crackles, add the gram dal, black gram dal, chillies and saute for minute. |

Now add the asafoetida, and tomatoes and saute till it becomes mushy. |

Now add the finely cut ajwain leaves and saute till it becomes soft |

Now add the mashed dal, salt and curry leaves and coriander leaves and boil everything together for few minutes |

Serve hot with rice and curry |
