Instant Arsi Upma Mix

Instant Arsi Upma mix is an instant mix to prepare the Arsi upma or broken rice upma in a jiffy. These instant mixes are preservatve free and healthy too.

Arsi upma or Rice upma is a regular breakfast at home. It is quite easy to cook too. To add convenience to my cooking I make the instant mixes so that there is no hassle preparing breakfast in a rush. Adding to my instant mixes is this Instant Arsi Upma Mix.

What is Arsi Upma?

We prepare regular upma with semolina. However, in Tamilnadu, we prepare another type of upma. Here, we use broken raw rice along with toor dal. This arsi upma is not a very light breakfast. Hence arsi upma can be had as a brunch option too. If we like brown rice , then we can make brown rice upma too. Here instead of raw rice we can use brown rice . Have you tasted upma kozhukattai? It is arsi upma in kozhukattai form. This upma kozhukattai can be cooked with this instant arsi upma mix.

Preparation of Instant Arsi Upma Mix:

Let us see how we can easily prepare this instant arsi upma mix at home with very simple ingredients. Here the main ingredients are raw rice, toor dal, red chillies. We will be adding some pepper and cumin for flavouring too.

INGREDIENTS

Raw rice          2 Cups

Toor Dal          1/2 cup

Red chillies     6

Peppercorn      1 tbsp

Curry leaves     Few

FOR THE TEMPERING

Coconut Oil          1 tbsp

Mustard seeds     2 tsp

Cumin seeds         2 tsp

Bengal gram dal   1 tbsp

Asafoetida             3/4 tsp

PREPARATION:

  1. Wash the rice and dal well. Drain it immediately and dry it in well. There should be no dampness at all.
  2. Roast the rice, dal and chillies together to remove any remaining dampness. Let it cool completely.
  3. Grind the pepper coarsely and keep aside
  4. Dry roast the curry leaves and keep aside.
  5. Now transfer the rice dal mixture to the jar of a mixer and grind it coarsely into a rava consistency.
  6. Add the coarsely ground pepper to this
  7. To this add the roasted curry leaves
  8. Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds. When it begins to splutter add the cumin, Bengal gram dal and asafoetida and as it begins to brown, pour this on the prepared instant arsi upma mix.
  9. Store it in an airtight container

  • Mixer/Grinder/ Spice grinder

Ingredients
  

  • 2 Cups Raw Rice
