I am sure every mother is in constant search for dishes that the child will eat without throwing a tantrum. When you have to host a party, the search becomes even more vigorous. Green moong rava appe perfectly fits in your search.
This is an instant version of appe and the time taken to prepare instant appe is very less. You need to have only the soaked green gram ready before you are ready to make this. The green colour is sure to entice the little guests. One bite into this appe will make them reach out for more.
This green moong rava appe has a lovely texture. It is crispy from outside while the center is butter soft. The best part of the batter is that , the same batter can be used to make both idli and appe. Here I have used asafoetida in the batter, you can choose to use cumin powder too. You can add onions in the batter. Well, the options are innumerable.
When I offered it to the kids at a recent get together, it was an instant success with the kids and adults alike. One of the parents came up to me and asked if the batter had butter in it. That should tell you about the texture of the appe. It has a very lovely brown coloured crispy outer crust and a very pleasant green coloured soft center. The natural colour will surely entice anyone. Do try this non fail recipe which I had bookamarked from Sujatha. After having tried this green moong rava appe, next in my to do list is the green gram rava idli and I am sure it was be as delicious as these.
The other appe or kuzhipaniyaram on this blog are
Soak the whole green moong overnight in enough water
Next morning grind the lentil with ginger, green chilly and coriander into a smooth paste. Add just enough water for grinding the paste
Mix the ground lentil mixture with rava/ semolina, curd, salt and asafoetida. Add more curd if necessary to get the idli batter consistency
Cover it and leave it aside for 15 mins
Now heat an abelskewer/paniyaram pan with little oil in each slot. Let it heat up a little before your pour the batter
When you are ready to make the appe, add the eno fruit salt to the batter along with the lemon juice. Mix well. You will see it frothing up.
Now pour ladle full of batter into each slot, drizzle oil on it, cover with a lid and cook on low flame for 2 mins.Turn all the appe upside down and cook for further 2 minutes till the outer layer starts to broen
Slowly take it out and transfer to a plate lined with absorbent paper.
Serve warm with a chutney of your choice. I served it with tomato onion chutney
