Breakfast is an important meal of the day. Generally, it has some amount of carbohydrates and protein to take care of the energy needed for the day. For us South Indians, the choice is huge. Ranging from a variety of idli’s, dosai, appam aapam the list in endless. Most of south Indians will have a batch of this idli dosai batter in the refrigerator all the time since we all know that if all else fails, there is still some batter to the rescue. Jokes apart, some days despite proper planning we end up wondering what we could make for breakfast and at such times, the instant ones are our saviour.

This instant rava appe, which is a distant cousin of our paniyaram does not need much preparation and ingredients. This works out well when we do not have the time to ferment the batter. The souring agent is the curd used in this recipe. Together with some onions and green chillies it works like magic. I have adapted this recipe from One hot stove.

Ingredients required:-
Rava: The hero ingredient in this recipe is rava /sooji/ semolina. I have used roasted semolina you could use unroasted ones too. I prefer to use the bombay rava which is neither very fine like the chiroti rava nor thick like bansi rava.
Curd: Curd used in this recipe is the souring agent which helps the quick action needed for fermentation. Use the curd which is at room temperature and the appe tastes better if sour curd is used.
Gram dal: The dal we use in this recipe is only to add crunchiness to break the monotonous texture of the appe.
Vegetables: Not many vegetables you will need to make this appe. an onion , some chillies and to flavour coriander is all that you need to have.
How can this rava appe be served:
The accompaniments that you will need to serve could be a chutney and dosai milaga podi. Thenga chutney, thakkali chutney is generally served with his. You can serve it with Chettinad chutney too.
