Vella adai is prepared as an offering for the lord on karadaiyan nombu or savitri nombu
The preparation of vella adai and kara adai is very important for karadaiyan Nombu. In Tamilnadu, married women observe this festival called karadaiyan nombu. Karadaiyan nombu falls on March 14 th 2019. It is on this day that women here observe fast, offers prayers for the well being of their spouse. How does vella adai feature in this festival?
Well, mythology explains this to us. It was on this day that Savitri prepared this vella adai. She offered it to Lord Yama along with butter. It was her way of thanking the Lord for giving life back to her husband. It is said that she offered the following prayer to the Lord
“urugadha vennaiyum urukkiya oradaiyum naan tharuven piriyamal en kanavanudan vazha vendum”
Place the banana leaf. Clean it well. Now tie a single flower to the center of the sacred yellow thread. Keep it on the leaf. Place vella adai, kara adai, butter on the leaf. Now first tie one prepared thread to the idol of the goddess if you have one. Place kumkum on her forehead. Next, you apply kumkum on your forehead. Keep some flowers to the goddess. If you can, keep a string of flower on your hair too. Now sit down in front of the banana leaf, pray the above-said prayer by Savitri. Then tie the sacred yellow thread around your neck. Offer the prayers to the lord, do the namaskaram to the lord and the elders of the house and break the fast by partaking the vella adai and butter as prasadam. Later have the kara adai too.
The preparation of Vella adai is very simple. The jaggery is boiled with water and the cowpeas and coconut are added to it. Later the rice flour is added and cooked till everything comes together. The adais are prepared and steamed and offered to the lord and goddess with unmelted butter. We make karadai or upma kozhukkataai along with vella adai.
