I’m not a big fan of sweet ragi drinks or the kanji versions made with milk. I love kanji made with buttermilk, though, and this one sounds just perfect. I’m surely going to try this out soon. 🙂

A very healthy summer savoury drink with combines the goodness of finger millet or ragi and buttermilk
Chennai is all set to welcome the Summer. Do I sound like I am looking forward to it? Well. Not really. But the least I can do is not to let the heat take a toll on our health. Generally, we need to keep ourselves hydrated. The best remedy is drink water regularly. I always reduce the intake of caffeine during these hot summer months. It is advisable to drink fresh juices without the addition of sugar. But then if you have a wholesome drink which can substitute the breakfast for a day then I would definitely go in for this healthy ragi kanji. Ragi or finger millet has innumerable
Ragi is rich in calcium. This is the best source of a non-diary form of calcium. Hence suitable to be used for young growing children and adults. Particularly it is said to help in reducing the onset of osteoporosis.
Finger millet or ragi is rich in dietary fibre. As it is low in the glycemic index, it is said to control diabetes and also help in weight loss.
This wonder grain is gluten-free and rich in proteins. So this helps in weight reduction and building of the muscles
Use of ragi is said to reduce anaemia in patients
Having said about the benefits of ragi, I would also add a word of caution though. Anything in excess is not good. So It is always advisable to consume ragi in moderation especially people who have kidney stones
I have prepared this healthy ragi kanji from ragi flour or finger millet flour. To prepare the flour, wash and soak the millet overnight. Next day drain the water and tie it in a cloth to sprout it, Dry it completely and powder the millet. Alternatively, you can use the store bought flour too. Mix the required amount of flour with water and make a paste. Add more water and cook it in low flame till it thickens. Let it cool completely and add buttermilk and other spices to make a savoury drink which fills your stomach and cools your body.
The other recipes which you can make with Ragi or finger millet are
